Hatha Yoga For Beginners

In this yoga video, you will learn some yoga basics for beginners. You'll start sitting so I recommend getting a pillow or folded blanket. Sit so that you're hips are near the edge of your blanket or pillow. Ideally, sit on something high enough so that your knees are a bit lower than your hips. Today's class starts with an intention. An intention is something to set that helps to create focus and positive thoughts to your yoga practice. We'll come onto our backs next to practice yogic breathing, warm up the ankles and hamstrings. There are also gentle twists to warm up the spine and some hip stretching. Next, we'll warm up the spine a but more on our hands and knees and next we practice lunges. Lunges are great to stretch the hip flexors which is where the leg connects to the pelvis. This area becomes very tight when we sit in chairs a lot. There are more twists added to the lunges which are great for digestion and spine health. I'll teach you how to practice downward dog next. Downward dog is a great posture to lengthen the spine. We compress the spine whenever we're sitting or standing, so practicing down dog a lot is great! Then we'll learn how to practice a sun salutation. Sun salutations are awesome movements for the spine and are a pretty complete practice. Standing postures are next. They're great for creating strength and stability in the body. Some strengthening backbends follow the standing postures and then seated forward bends and twists make up our cool down. The last posture we'll practice is savasana. It can be the most challenging pose because it's time to rest and be quiet. We're so used to "doing" that when we stop and practice "being" we can find it quite difficult. Do your best and don't forget to thank yourself for giving yourself some love!
